our OVERSEAS aFRICA Project
Three members of our team travelled to The Gambia in West Africa to survey wetlands, interview villagers and visit conservation projects that we have previously supported. This trip and our work in West Africa is made possible, due to a significant private donation. During our trip to The Gambia, our team were surveying wetlands along the River Gambia. A wide range of sites were visited including seasonal costal wetlands, mangrove swamp, rice fields, quarries, riverine wetlands and an estuary.

Overseas Projects
Gambia, Africa
The main aim of the trip was to discuss the trust’s support for the Kartong Bird Observatory and the development of research facilities and an accommodation block for visiting students and researchers. Kartong is Africa’s oldest bird study site and has a close association to Norfolk as its warden is a former Fakenham resident and the vice chairman is from Harleston. The Otter Trust is working with The Gambian Tourism and Wildlife Ministries to create two new nature reserves to protect water birds and mammals including otters, manatee and the slender-snouted crocodile.

Kartong Bird Observatory, Gambia
We financially support the work of the Kartong Bird Observatory in The Gambia. Volunteers from the UK helped with catching Hooded Vultures in an effort to understand population dynamics and check for blood parasites. This vulture species is Critically Endangered and the Kartong team are at the forefront of efforts to increase our understanding of the needs of this species.
